Abstract  Abstract

Variants of the bandwidth used by a radio communication connection are adapted by changing the type of information that is transmitted, for example, in a TOMA environment, a first downlink time slot associated with a double or triple speed connection may have a first format, whereas in a second time interval associated with the same connection it can have a second different format from the first one. The bandwidth in the second (or third) time slot can be used to transmit information on a fast out-of-band channel (FOC). The FOC may provide information relating to the same connection as the payload or the data field in that time interval, for example a service type identifier that informs the mobile station or base station about the type of information (for example voice, video or data) that transmit the payload. Alternatively, FOC information can be associated with a connection or connections different from those supported by the payload or the data field that contains the FOC.
