Abstract  Abstract

A system and method for providing a prepaid subscription service to a mobile subscriber in an integrated wireless telecommunications network (10) that has a circuit switching part and a packet switching part of Generald Package Service (GPRS). A prepaid subscriber class (PPSC) (40) is stored in an origin point record (HLR) (16), and the PPSC class is sent from the HRL to a GPRS server support node (SGSN) (12) when Prepared is registered in the packet switching part of the network. In addition, the PPSC class can be sent from the SGSN to a GPRS Access Support (GGSN) node (25) to indicate that the subscriber is a prepaid subscriber. When the mobile subscriber initiates a packet switching data session, the SGSN, the GGSN, or both periodically send partial call data records (CDRs) to a prepaid center (PPC) (19). When the mobile subscriber initiates a circuit switching call, the MSC periodically sends partial CDRs to the PPC. The PPC calculates, in almost real time, a new balance for the prepaid subscriber. The ongoing call is disconnected and prepaid services are interrupted when the account balance drops to zero.
