Abstract  Abstract

The invention claims a wireless transmitting/receiving unit (WTRU). The WTRU) is capable of being used for discarding a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) service data unit (SDU) or a protocol data unit (PDU). The PDCP is provided with a timer and discards the PDCP SDU upon expiration of the timer. The timer may be set upon receiving the PDCP SDU from an upper layer or upon submitting the PDCP SDU to a lower layer for transmission. The timer and a radio link control discard timer may be coordinated. Said WTRU comprises a processor for communicating with the timer and the buffer; the processor comprises a PDCP entity; the buffer is configured to store at least one PDCP packet; the PDCP entity is configured to initialize said time and to determine the cost time in relative to the reference event; and said PDCP entity is configured to determine that the PDCP packet should be discarded when the cost time reaches or passes the threshold value and to transmit the PDCP packet discarding indication to the lower layer; the PDCP packet comprises at least one SDU or PDU.
