Abstract
A method and system for reporting short message (SM) capability over an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) using a session initiation protocol (SIP) are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) registers with a core network and sends a message indicating its SM capability via the IMS to the core network. The core network then updates the WTRU capabilities based on the message and routes an SM to the WTRU via the IMS.

Claim
1. In a wireless communication system including a core network and an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS), a method of reporting a short message (SM) capability via the IMS, the method comprising: a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) registering with the core network; the WTRU sending a first message to the core network, the first message reporting a WTRU SM capability via the IMS to the core network; and the core network updating WTRU capabilities based on the first message, whereby an SM is routed to the WTRU via the IMS.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first message is included in a network capability information element.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the first message is sent during an attach procedure.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first message indicates capability of transmitting and receiving at least one of a short message service (SMS) message, a multimedia message service (MMS) message, and an instant message service message via the IMS.
5. The method of claim 1 further comprising: the core network sending a second message to the WTRU, the second message reporting a capability of the core network supporting a short message service (SMS) via the IMS.
6. In a wireless communication system including a core network and an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS), a method of reporting a short message (SM) capability via the IMS, the method comprising: a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) registering with the core network; the WTRU sending a first message to the core network, the first message reporting a WTRU SM capability via the IMS to the core network, the WTRU SM capability via the IMS being recorded in a home location register (HLR); and the WTRU registering with an SM IP gateway (SM-IP-GW) for transmitting and receiving an SM using IP, whereby the SM is routed to the WTRU via the IMS.
7. The method of claim 6 wherein the SM is routed to the WTRU via a third generation (3G) radio access network (RAN).
8. The method of claim 6 wherein the SM is routed to the WTRU via an interworking wireless local area network (I-WLAN).
9. The method of claim 6 wherein the first message is included in a network capability information element
10. The method of claim 6 wherein the first message is sent during an attach procedure
11. The method of claim 6 wherein the first message indicates capability of transmitting and receiving at least one of a short message service (SMS) message, a multimedia message service (MMS) message, and an instant message service message via the IMS
12. The method of claim 6 further comprising: the core network sending a second message to the WTRU, the second message reporting a capability of the core network supporting a short message service (SMS) via the IMS

A wireless communication system for delivering a short message (SM) to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) via an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) based on a WTRU SM capability via the IMS, the system comprising: a core network; and a WTRU configured to send a first message to the core network, the first message reporting a WTRU SM capability via the IMS, whereby the core network routes an SM to the WTRU via the IMS

A wireless communication system for delivering a short message (SM) to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) via an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) based on a WTRU SM capability via the IMS, the system comprising: a WTRU configured to send a first message to a core network, the first message reporting a WTRU SM capability via the IMS; a radio access network (RAN) for providing radio access to the WTRU; and the core network comprising: a general packet radio service (GPRS) support node (GSN) configured to update the WTRU SM capability via the IMS in a home location register (HLR); the HLR configured to provide routing information for routing the SM; a short message service-gateway mobile switching center (SMS- GMSC) configured to forward the SM received from a service center to a short message-IP-gateway (SM-IP-GW) based on an address of the SM-IP-GW obtained from the HLR; and the SM-IP-GW configured to route the SM to the WTRU via the IMS
19. The system of claim 18 wherein the RAN is a third generation (3G) RAN.
20. The system of claim 18 wherein the RAN is an interworking wireless local area network (I-WLAN).
21 The system of claim 18 wherein the first message is included in a network capability information element.
22. The system of claim 18 wherein the first message is sent during an attach procedure.
23. The system of claim 18 wherein the first message indicates capability of transmitting and receiving at least one of a short message service (SMS) message, a multimedia message service (MMS) message, and an instant message service message via the IMS.
