Abstract  Abstract

Method and device for Assisted Global Positioning System (GPS) protocol that minimizes the required data flow between the cellular infrastructure and each mobile phone that supports GPS-based positioning capability. It comprises four specific innovations: a method to reduce or eliminate the need for GPS ephemeris updates to each mobile; a method for compression of the differential correction broadcast message; a method to control the speed at which the network updates the ephemeris of each telephone based on an age limit of the ephemeris; and finally; a method that each mobile can use to determine when it is necessary to update an ephemeris, based on a prediction of accuracy and a threshold that is unique to each mobile.
