Procedure for establishing a connection in a telecommunication network comprising different protocols and an interworking function (MSC, IWF) to adapt the different protocol characteristics used for a connection between the calling terminal and the interworking function and the interworking function and the called terminal, which comprises the following steps: a) reception in the interworking function of a request from the calling terminal to establish a first type of connection using first protocol features; b) carrying out an establishment procedure according to the first protocol characteristics used for the first type of connection between the interworking function and the called terminal, including the procedure the reservation of resources in the interworking function and the beginning of the negotiation procedure to establish the connection with the called terminal; c) determination of a second type of connection; d) checking the result of said establishment procedure and, if said verification stage indicates that said establishment procedure has not been satisfactory, e) establishment of said second type of connection between the interworking function and the called terminal and change of the connection between the calling terminal and the interworking function to the second type of connection.
