A method for map mapping an improved physical downlink control channel ePDCCH for physical resource blocks (330i) in a radio frame (300), comprising: performing the mapping (810) of modulated symbols in the ePDCCH channel for at least one control channel element; performing the mapping (820) of the at least one control channel element for at least one of: resource elements located in a plurality of blocks of physical resources distributed in a sub-frame of the radio frame, wherein each block of resources is separated by at least one additional resource block in the sub-frame, and where each block of resources is from a group of distributed resource blocks (614) that is allocated for distributed resource mapping (830) ); and distributed resource elements in a single resource block in the sub-frame, where the control channel element is mapped to be distributed in frequency and time relative to other resource elements mapped in the single resource block , wherein the single resource block from a group of localized resource blocks (612) is allocated for the mapping of localized resources (840), wherein the resource blocks of the group of localized resource blocks are contiguous in the frequency domain in the sub-frame; the application (850) of the mapping to control data to form an ePDCCH configured to be communicated from an improved Node B node eNB to a user equipment UE; and the adjustment of the relationship between the group of localized resource blocks and the group of resource blocks distributed through the RRC signaling for a long-term adjustment.
