Abstract  Abstract

The present invention relates to determining the operation mode of a base station in a wireless communication system i.e. the connection mode (access mode) of a cell based on which User Equipment (UE) connection is allowed by a base station in an evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) that has evolved from a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) or a Long Term Evolution (LTE) system. A process of determining the connection mode of a cell is performed by checking the existence of a subscriber group identity (such as a closed subscriber group identity) if it is determined that the connection mode of a cell is not allowed for one or more UEs belonging to a particular subscriber group. Applicable to cells with hybrid access modes. UE checks the existence of a CSG identity (CSG ID) in addition to a CSG indicator thereby allowing the UE to distinguish a hybrid cell from a typical or closed subscriber group cell.
