Abstract  Abstract

SUMMARY A method and apparatus for deriving approximate Doppler of a satellite positioning system (SPS) receiver from approximate positions obtained from a cellular communication system information source is disclosed. In one embodiment, an approximate position of the SPS receiver is derived from an information source and the approximate position is used to determine approximate Doppler to a plurality of SPS satellites at a given time. The approximate Doppler is then used to reduce the processing time when determining the pseudorange to the SPS satellite or when acquiring signals from the SPS satellite. In another aspect of the invention, a reference signal is used to provide a local oscillator signal, which is used to capture an SPS signal in an SPS receiver. This reference signal is extracted from the data signal modulated on the carrier frequency. The data signal on the carrier frequency is, in one example, transmitted from a wireless cell site that communicates with an SPS receiver having a cellular-based communication receiver.
