Abstract  Abstract

A key management approach is provided for securing a communication handoff between an access terminal and two access points. When the access terminal moves from the current access point to the new access point, the access terminal sends a short handoff request to the new access point. The short handoff request may include an access terminal ID; the short handoff request does not include an access point ID. The new access point sends its identifier and the access terminal identifier to the authenticator. Using the previously generated master temporary key, access point identifier, and access terminal identifier, the authenticator generates a master session key. The master session key is sent to the access point by the authenticator. The access terminal can independently generate the same new security key so that it can communicate securely with the new access point. (Selection) FIG.
