Abstract

A method (10) for establishing an alternative HRPD signaling link between an HRPD access network and an access terminal with non-HRPD access is disclosed. This includes the step (12) of providing a signal transfer means (SFF) (22) between the access terminal (AT) (24) and the high-speed packet data (HRPD) access network (AN) (26); (24) establishing a data tunnel (28) between the signal transfer means (22) (14) and exchanging HRPD signal messages and HRPD data via the data tunnel (28) (16) The HRPD access network (26) and the access terminal (24) are identified by non-HRPD access by the signal transfer means (22) by reading the header with a certain identifier and mapping the header to the address of the access terminal or network Step (18), access terminal (24) and HRPD access network; The HRPD signaling messages and HRPD data arriving from network (26) to the signal transfer means (22), respectively and a step (20) for transferring to the HRPD access network (26) and the access terminal (24). Method (10) performs initiation and session establishment procedures, minimizes time, interruptions and packet loss during handoff to the HRPD access network and allows for seamless mobility.
