Abstract  Abstract

A mobile node is handed over from E-UTRAN to UTRAN in a scenario where SMS is the only service of the mobile node. The method establishes a signaling connection for exchanging SMS in a handover destination network and allows radio resources to be saved by avoiding the data connection in the handover destination network because the data connection is not used. In order for the MME to determine whether to establish a data connection at the handover destination UTRAN and to avoid establishing the data connection, the SGSN and the corresponding PDP context for the data connection are set to the “save” state. Command the UE accordingly. Furthermore, embodiments relate to improved SMS delivery for IDLE mode UEs that enable ISR to avoid the involvement of an MSC server. Instead, only nodes in the packet switched domain will be involved. (Selection) Figure 31
