Abstract
A network communication system having a data source and a switch is disclosed. Each of the data source and the switch are interconnected by a packet switched network and synchronized to a common clock. The system also has a network controller that maintains a record of network characteristics including the respective transmission delays of the data source and the switch and the transmission delays of the links in the packet switched network. The network controller, for each of a plurality of packets of a given type of traffic, in a path from a specific data source through at least one specific switch and in each of the specific data source and at least one specific switch Process network characteristics to generate departure time schedules. Paths and schedules are optimized to meet jitter requirements for a given type of traffic.
