Abstract  Abstract

(57) (Summary) The present invention relates to handover in a cellular radio system and to a cellular radio system. The cellular radio system comprises at least one subscriber terminal (101 and 102) and a base station (103-107), wherein the subscriber terminal (101) of the system maintains an active set of base stations (103-106). It is continually updated and one or several base stations belonging to the active set have a connection or connection setup facility to the subscriber terminal (101). The subscriber terminal (101) controls the downlink transmission of one or several base stations (103-106) of the active set by turning on or off the transmission of the base stations (103-106). This method provides a fast soft hardover similar to a hard handover.
