Abstract  Abstract

The mobile station accesses the base station by randomly selecting a first reverse link common control signal channel from a set of random access channels. The mobile station transmits the request portion of the access probe through the first reverse link common control signal channel. The request portion is likely to collide with other signals. The request portion includes a hash identifier derived from a unique identification number using a hash function. The hash identifier semi-uniquely identifies the mobile station. The mobile station receives a channel assignment message from the base station specifying the hash identifier and the reserved access channel. Reserved access channels provide communication with low likelihood of contention. The mobile station transmits the message portion of the access probe through the reserved access channel.
