Abstract  Abstract

A first communication device (10) and method for calculating a random access transmission power to be used in the first communication device in a Long Term Evolution communications network is disclosed. The method includes the first communication device receiving data from a second communication device on a radio channel indicating a random access reception power level. A desired random access reception power level of the second communication device is determined based on the received data and a parameter of random access configuration that influences a detection performance of the random access at the second communication device which parameter comprises a preamble format and/or a basic cyclic shift value of a preamble. The random access transmission power to be used is calculated based on the desired random access reception power level and a power ramping increasing the random access transmission power based on a transmission attempt number and also taking into account power path loss between the first communication device and the second communication device.
