Abstract  Abstract

1. A method comprising the steps of! receiving a plurality of data streams subjected to permutation over a plurality of channels; ! backward swapping data streams; ! determining a quality metric for each of the data streams; ! determining a summary quality metric based on quality metrics for each of the data streams, wherein the summary quality metric contains a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) reference value and at least one ΔSNR value that indicates at least one difference between quality metrics measured on based on data sent at the same time; and! transmit the summary quality metric to the receiver. ! 2. The method according to claim 1, in which the data streams are subjected to permutation according to the pseudo-random pattern. ! 3. The method according to claim 2, in which the pseudo-random pattern contains a complete permutation of the possible combinations of data streams and channels. ! 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising decoding the encoded data streams. ! 5. The method according to claim 4, in which the encoded data streams are decoded using sequential interference suppression. ! 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the quality metrics are determined based on the SNR reference value plus a multiple of ΔSNR values. ! 7. A device containing! means for receiving a plurality of permuted data streams over a plurality of channels; ! means for reverse permutation of data streams; ! means for determining a quality metric for each of the data streams; ! means for determining a summary quality metric based on quality metrics for each of the data streams, wherein the summary quality metric contains a reference
