Abstract  Abstract

FIELD: physics; communication. ^ SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to techniques of regulating rate of data transfer on numerous parallel channels in a multi-channel communication system. Regulation is done using a closed loop. The inner loop assesses channel conditions for the communication line and selects the appropriate rate of data transfer for each of the parallel channels based on the assessment. For each parallel channel the assumed signal/noise ratio (SNR) is calculated based on the channel assessment. The operating SNR is calculated based on the assumed SNR and SNR-compensation for the parallel channel. The rate of data transfer is chosen based on the operating SNR for the parallel channel and several required SNR for several rates of data transfer supported by the system. The outer loop assesses quality of transmitted data signals received on the numerous parallel channels and adjusts operation of the inner loop. For example SNR-compensation for each parallel channel is adjusted based on the status of packets received on such a parallel line. ^ EFFECT: provision for regulating rate of data transfer on numerous parallel channels in a multi-channel communication system. ^ 63 cl 14 dwg 2 tbl
