Abstract
A method for controlling discontinuous reception in a wireless transmit/receive unit includes defining a plurality of DRX levels, wherein each DRX level includes a respective DRX cycle length and transitioning between DRX levels based on a set of criteria. The transitioning may be triggered by implicit rules.

Claim
1. A method implemented by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising:
receiving a radio resource control (RRC) message comprising discontinuous reception (DRX) parameters, the DRX parameters comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle length, an indication of a second DRX cycle length, and an indication of a length of a DRX transition timer, wherein the indication of the length of the DRX transition timer comprises an indication of a number of DRX cycles at which the WTRU is to perform DRX using the first DRX cycle length prior to implicitly transitioning to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length if no new transmissions are received; performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length; receiving a trigger; performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length based on receiving the trigger; starting the DRX transition timer based on beginning DRX operation using the first DRX cycle length; determining that the DRX transition timer has expired; and transitioning the WTRU from performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle based on determining that the DRX transition timer has expired, wherein the second DRX cycle length is a multiple of the first DRX cycle length.
2. The method as in claim 1, further comprising resetting the DRX transition timer based on transmission activity.
3. The method as in claim 1, further comprising monitoring for control channel transmissions during a DRX active period when performing DRX.
4. The method as in claim 1, wherein a received control channel transmission results in the WTRU to changing its DRX cycle length.
5. The method as in claim 1, wherein WTRU medium access control (MAC) is used to implement DRX operation.
6. The method as in claim 1, wherein the DRX parameters are received as a plurality of information elements.
7. The method as in claim 1, wherein the DRX transition timer is synchronized with a base station timer.
8. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising a processor and memory, the processor and memory being configured to:
receive a radio resource control (RRC) message comprising discontinuous reception (DRX) parameters, the DRX parameters comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle length, an indication of a second DRX cycle length, and an indication of a length of a DRX transition timer, wherein the indication of the length of the DRX transition timer comprises an indication of a number of DRX cycles at which the WTRU is to perform DRX using the first DRX cycle length prior to implicitly transitioning to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length if no new transmissions are received; cause the WTRU to perform DRX using the second DRX cycle length; receive a trigger; cause the WTRU to perform DRX using the first DRX cycle length based on receiving the trigger; start the DRX transition timer based on the WTRU beginning DRX operation using the first DRX cycle length; determine that the DRX transition timer has expired; and transition the WTRU from performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle based on determining that the DRX transition timer has expired, wherein the second DRX cycle length is a multiple of the first DRX cycle length.
9. The WTRU as in claim 8, wherein the processor and memory are configured to reset the DRX transition timer based on transmission activity.
10. The WTRU as in claim 8, wherein the processor and memory are configured to monitor for reception of downlink control channel transmissions during a DRX active period when the WTRU is performing DRX operation.
11. The WTRU as in claim 8, wherein the processor and memory are configured to change a WTRU DRX cycle length based on a received control channel transmission.
12. The WTRU as in claim 8, wherein the WTRU is configured to implement DRX operation using medium access control (MAC).
13. The WTRU as in claim 8, wherein the DRX parameters are received as a plurality of information elements.
14. A method implemented by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising:
receiving a radio resource control (RRC) message comprising discontinuous reception (DRX) parameters, the DRX parameters comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle length, an indication of a second DRX cycle length, and an indication of a length of time at which the WTRU is to perform DRX using the first DRX cycle length prior to implicitly transitioning to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length if no new transmissions are received, wherein the length of time is indicated as a number of DRX cycles; performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length; receiving a trigger; performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length based on receiving the trigger; determining that the WTRU has performed DRX using the first DRX cycle length for the indicated length of time; and transitioning the WTRU from performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle based on determining that the WTRU has performed DRX using the first DRX cycle length for the indicated length of time, wherein the second DRX cycle length is a multiple of the first DRX cycle length.
15. The method as in claim 14, wherein further comprising:
while performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length, receiving a transmission; determining that the WTRU has performed DRX using the first DRX cycle length for the indicated length of time after receiving the transmission; and transitioning the WTRU from performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle based on determining that the WTRU has performed DRX using the first DRX cycle length for the indicated length of time after receiving the transmission.
16. The method as in claim 14, wherein a command received by the WTRU causes the WTRU to change its DRX cycle length.
17. The method as in claim 14, wherein DRX operation is implemented at a medium access control (MAC) level.
18. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising a processor and memory, the processor and memory being configured to:
receive a radio resource control (RRC) message comprising discontinuous reception (DRX) parameters, the DRX parameters comprising an indication of a first DRX cycle length, an indication of a second DRX cycle length, and an indication of a length of time at which the WTRU is to perform DRX using the first DRX cycle length prior to implicitly transitioning to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle length if no new transmissions are received, wherein the length of time is indicated as a number of DRX cycles; cause the WTRU to perform DRX using the second DRX cycle length; receive a trigger; cause the WTRU to perform DRX using the first DRX cycle length based on receiving the trigger; determine that the WTRU has performed DRX using the first DRX cycle length for the indicated length of time; and transition the WTRU from performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle based on determining that the WTRU has performed DRX using the first DRX cycle length for the indicated length of time, wherein the second DRX cycle length is a multiple of the first DRX cycle length.
19. The WTRU as in claim 18, wherein the processor and memory are configured to:
receive a transmission while the WTRU is performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length; determine that the WTRU has performed DRX using the first DRX cycle length for the indicated length of time after receipt of the transmission; and transition the WTRU from performing DRX using the first DRX cycle length to performing DRX using the second DRX cycle based on determining that the WTRU has performed DRX using the first DRX cycle length for the indicated length of time after receipt of the transmission.
20. The WTRU as in claim 18, wherein the processor and memory are configured to change a WTRU DRX cycle length based on a received control channel transmission.
