The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for transmitting a message. A method for transmitting a message in a message transmission system including an Inter-Working Function (IWF) identified through a Representative Mobile Subscriber Integrated Services Digital Network Number (R-MSISDN) according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: transferring a message including an R-MSISDN and an address of a receiving terminal from a transmission side to an IWF corresponding to the R-MSISDN; the IWF for receiving the message extracting the address of the receiving terminal included in the message; obtaining routing information using the address of the receiving terminal extracted through the IWF; the IWF rebuilding the message using the routing information; and the IWF transferring the rebuilt message to the receiving terminal corresponding to the routing information. According to one embodiment of the present invention the present invention can transfer the message even when there is no receiver routing information.
