Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for cell update are disclosed while in a Cell_FACH state. After selecting a target cell, the system information is read from a target cell, which includes the common system information of the shared channel and high-speed downlink (HS-DSCH). A temporary radio network identity (RNTI) received in the source cell is cleared and a RECEPTION_HS_DSCH variable is set to TRUE. An HS-DSCH media access control entity (MAC-hs) is configured based on the common information of the HS-DSCH system. The high-speed downlink packet (HSDPA) access transmission is then received in the net cell. A CELL UPDATE message is sent to notify a cell change. The HSDPA transmission can be received using a common H-RNTI broadcast in the system information, a reserved H-RNTI as requested in a CELL UPDATE message, or a temporary identity that is a subset of a U-RNTI. The MAC-hs entity can be reset.
