Abstract  Abstract

A method for ciphering and re-ordering packets in a wireless communication system comprising ciphering input packets at a first protocol layer using a full sequence number as a crypto-sync to obtain ciphered packets; compressing at a second protocol layer the full sequence number to form a partial sequence number wherein the partial sequence number comprises a less significant portion of the full sequence number and is used for over-the-air re-ordering; generating output packets from the ciphered packets at the second protocol layer the output packets appended with the partial sequence number wherein the second protocol layer is a lower protocol layer in a wireless communication protocol than the first protocol layer; and transmitting the output packets over-the-air to a remote entity as well as a corresponding apparatus.
