Abstract  Abstract

A method for providing wireless communication of digital signals, the digital signals communicating between a plurality of wireless subscriber units (110) and a base station (170), the digital signals communicating through the use of at least one channel (160) of radio frequency via Modulated Multiple Access Code Division (CDMA) radio signals defined by long pseudo random noise (PN) codes, the digital signals also having a given nominal data transmission rate, the method comprising the steps of: making available a plurality of subchannels (300) on each CDMA radio channel, in which the data transmission rate of each subchannel is less than the nominal data transmission rate of the digital signals; assign available subchannels as needed, to connections that actively send data between the subscriber units and the base station; characterized by the additional steps of: assigning the same long PN code to at least two different subscriber units, but using different code phases to define subchannels, so that at least two different subscriber units use the same long PN code but with different code phases; and assign subchannels to maintain a reverse link in the subchannels for subscriber units that are activated, but do not actively send data at that time.
