Abstract  Abstract

A method for determining differences in timing between a plurality of base stations (104) in a wireless communication system (100), each operating between the plurality of base stations (104) either synchronously or asynchronously, and one of which is designated said base stations (104) as a reference base station, said procedure comprising: receiving (312) a request, at a terminal (106), for measurements of time differences between each, between the plurality of base stations (104) , with respect to the reference base station, characterized in that: time difference measurements include a first part indicating a time difference at the code element level and a second part indicating a time difference at the frame level; and the method further comprises: estimating (316), at terminal (106), the time difference at the level of code element for each one between the plurality of base stations (104), based on the received downlink signals, transmitted from them; determine (318), at terminal (106), if the timing at the frame level is required for each one among the plurality of base stations (104); determine (324), at the terminal (106), the time difference measurements for the base stations (104) operated synchronously, based on the estimated time difference at the code element level and a predefined value, in case Timing at the frame level is not required; estimate (320), at terminal (106), the time difference at the frame level for the base stations (104) operated asynchronously; and determine (322), at terminal (106), the time difference measurements for the base stations (104) operated asynchronously, based on the estimated time difference at the code element level, and on the estimated time difference at the frame level, in case the timing at the frame level is needed.
