Abstract  Abstract

A method of time-aligning transmissions from multiple base stations to a terminal. In order to realize time-alignment, the difference between the arrival times of transmissions from the base stations, as observed at the terminal, is determined and provided to the system, where the terminal-specific radio frame arrives at the terminal within a predetermined time window. Used to adjust the timing. In one scheme, the time difference between two base stations is divided into a frame-level time difference and a chip-level time difference. Each time the estimated time difference is reported, the terminal measures the chip-level timing for each candidate base station for the reference base station. In addition, the terminal also measures frame-level timing, and includes this information in time difference measurements only when necessary. Otherwise, the terminal sets the frame-level portion to a predetermined value (eg, zero).
