A method for determining the position of a remote unit (20), comprising: receiving, in said remote unit (20), almanac data from compressed satellites or other representation of almanac data for a plurality of satellites of a positioning system by satellite, from a base station located in a separate position or from another satellite that emulates a base station; determine the time of day and the approximate position of the remote unit; obtaining the Doppler information for a plurality of said satellites of said satellite positioning system, from said almanac data of compressed satellites or other representation of almanac data, using the approximate time of day and position; receiving GPS signals from said satellites of said satellite positioning system; calculating, in said remote unit, the pseudo-distances for said remote unit, said Doppler information compensating the Doppler effect of said GPS signals that are received from said satellites of said satellite positioning system to calculate the pseudo-distances in the remote unit.
