Abstract  Abstract

A method of data transmission in a mobile communication system, comprising: receiving (705) from a higher layer a service data unit, SDU, and determining (720) if the SDU can be contained in a data unit of protocol, PDU; constructing the PDU, which comprises a header and a data field (425), in which the header comprises a serial number field (405), SN, and a one-bit field (410), which indicates that the PDU contains the SDU in the data field, if the SDU can be contained in a PDU; segment the SDU into a series of segments based on a transmissible PDU size, if the SDU cannot be contained in a PDU; construct a series of PDUs, the data field of each PDU comprising a segment of the series of segments, in which the header of each PDU comprises the SN field, the one-bit field, which indicates that the PDU does not fully comprise the SDU in the data field, and at least one length indicator field, LI, in which, if the data field of the PDU contains an intermediate segment of the SDU, the LI field is set to a predefined value which indicates that the PDU contains the intermediate segment but not the first segment or the last segment of the SDU; and send the PDUs to a receiver.
