Abstract  Abstract

A method for use in a high speed downlink packet access communication system (10) that supports a plurality of redundancy variations that is characterized by at least a first parameter comprising an indicator relating to self-decoding capability of a corresponding packet and a second parameter comprising a selection of a particular redundancy version from among a plurality of candidate redundancy versions and wherein the specific redundancy versions indicate a starting point for an included parity bit stream, the method comprising : - transmit (21) at least a first packet; - determining (22) a need to transmit redundant information accordingly for the first packet; - automatically select (23), for at least one of the first and second parameters, a specific value from a plurality of specific values, where the first parameter is automatically selected to a value that corresponds to the most efficient compromise between a decrease in the encoding rate effective relative to a corresponding amount of transmitted bits and the second parameter is automatically selected by incrementing a current value; - use the specific value to transmit the redundant information.
