Abstract  Abstract

A method for the transmission of information signals in a communication system (30) comprising: determining (1246) if the communication system would benefit from the transmission of an information signal by at least two transmission links to a remote station (36, 38), in which the at least two transmission links are formed between the remote station (36, 38) and a single sector of a base station (32); If the communications system would benefit from the transmission of the information signal by the at least two transmission links, then: encode (12441) the information signal to provide an encoded information signal; forming at least a first transmission signal and a second transmission signal, each having bits selected from the encoded information signal; and transmitting (1250) each of the at least one first and a second transmission signal by a respective link of the at least two transmission links; but, if the communications system would not benefit from the transmission of the information signal by the at least two transmission links, then: encode (12442) the information signal to provide an encoded information signal; and transmitting (1252) the information signal encoded by a single transmission link.
