Abstract
SOLUTION: The bandwidth utilization and transmission efficiency associated with the point-to-point transmission of Internet Protocol (IP) data packets in a network environment is improved as an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) compliant layer 2 (Bearer). AAL2) Improved by employing minicells. Bandwidth utilization and transmission efficiency map one or more data fields from the header portion of an IP data packet to one or more look-up tables, and then relate to one or more data fields of the IP data packet header. It is further improved by transmitting the address of the look-up table, rather than the data, in the AAL2 minicell header.
