SUMMARY A method and system are disclosed that enables high speed acquisition of a target base stations forward link signal in a mixed network of synchronous and asynchronous base stations. The serving base station sends the estimated timing error 417 between the serving base station and the target base station in the neighbor list. By using the timing information, the mobile station estimates a relative time offset 408 between the forward link signal received from the serving base station and the signal received from the target base station. The timing information captured during the handoff allows for an accurate update of the estimated timing error 417 subsequently transmitted in the neighbor list by the base station.
