Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for wireless resource control in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system is disclosed. A channel metric is calculated for each of the multiple transmit antennas. A subcarrier is allocated to each transmit antenna according to the channel metric of each transmit antenna. A signal is transmitted on each antenna using the allocated subcarrier. Adaptive modulation coding and transmission power control for each subcarrier can also be performed according to the channel metric. Power control can be implemented on a per antenna basis or a subcarrier basis. In performing power control, a subset of transmit antennas can be selected, and water polling can be applied only to the selected antenna. Water polling can be based on SNR rather than channel response.
