Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for establishing millimeter wave (mmW) link communication includes initial selection of candidate mmW base stations (mB) and configuration of mmW acquisition resources and procedures, both with the assistance of a cellular network. In addition, the method transmits mmW acquisition beacons, processes mmW acquisition beacons to achieve mmW beam alignment and timing synchronization, and performs uplink (UL) reporting over cellular or mmW links. In an example, an mmW wireless transmit / receive unit (WTRU) transmits millimeter wave (mmW) WTRU (mmW WTRU) information to a base station through a cellular system and includes a candidate mmW base station (mB) including mmW acquisition start timing information. A candidate list is received, and a correlation value of reception mmW acquisition start timing information with respect to mB in the candidate list is calculated. The mmW WTRU performs a sliding window correlation using the signature sequence corresponding to the mB and beam in the candidate list.
