Abstract  Abstract

A transmitter in a wireless communication system, such as a wide area code division multiple access (WCDMA) communication system, transmits one set of data in an in-phase (I) channel and another set of data in a quadrature (Q) channel. The transmitter generates a gain signal β and multiplies the digital data associated with the Q channel by the gain signal β. The complexity of the multiplication action is reduced by limiting the gain signal β to be a finite number of values that can be represented exactly by the specified number of bits, such as the right 4 bit value of the binary decimal point. The modulation error associated with the quantization of β can be eliminated by using the same quantized value β for all elements in the wireless communication system.
