Abstract  Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for improving the performance of a direct sequence spread spectrum communication system. In one embodiment, the system includes at least one communication channel that uses two different orthogonal spreading codes and corresponding portions of the available orthogonal code space. The portions of data processed by the communication channel are demultiplexed into other streams (471) and covered with corresponding other orthogonal spreading codes (472, 473). Streams covered by different orthogonal codes are combined 475 and transmitted over the same communication channel. One embodiment uses at least two different Walsh codes of different lengths (+-and + +--) to use three quarters of the Walsh space not used by the slow legacy channel.
