Abstract  Abstract

A method and an apparatus for transmitting and receiving feedback information in a wireless packet data communication system are provided to increase the efficiency of resource management by enabling an AN(Access Node) to select a single user MIMO mode and a multi-user MIMO mode dynamically. An AT(Access Terminal) in a wireless packet data communication system which supports both a single user MIMO mode and a multi-user MIMO mode comprises a channel estimator(22), a CQI(Channel Quality Indicator) predictor(23), an absolute CQI feedback signal generator(24), a relative CQI feedback signal generator(25), and a controller(26). Using a pilot signal received from an AN, the channel estimator estimates a channel for the single user MIMO mode and a channel for the multi-user MIMO mode. Based on the estimated channels, the CQI predictor calculates channel information for the single user MIMO mode and the multi-user MIMO mode. The absolute CQI feedback signal generator creates the first feedback information based on a basic MIMO mode notified from the AN. In this case, the basic MIMO mode is either the single user MIMO mode or the multi-user MIMO mode. The relative CQI feedback signal generator creates the second feedback information based on the other MIMO mode. The controller controls the CQI feedback signal generators according to the basic MIMO mode.
