Abstract  Abstract

The present invention relates to a speech activity detector for providing a signal for the purpose of detecting a speech period or a period comprising only noise. Speech is distinguished from noise by spectral comparisons 114 and 115 comparing the input signal with the stored noise estimate 113, and the update of the noise estimate (of the buffer 113) is under the control of the auxiliary detector 200. Obtained from an input involving filtering by a filter 105 that is allowed for a period of time that does not, and has a response that compensates for the frequency component of the input to improve operation for a signal having a strong harmonic component (e.g., a beep). The LPC prediction gain is calculated from the input x (i) and the remainder y (i), and the buffer update is suppressed if the gain exceeds the threshold.
