Abstract  Abstract

1. A method for controlling discontinuous reception (DRX) in a wireless transmit / receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising the steps of: WTRU receiving a DRX configuration comprising a plurality of DRX layers, each of the plurality of DRX layers comprising at least one DRX cycle length; the WTRU operates on a first DRX level from among a plurality of DRX levels; the WTRU determines that the WTRU timer has completed a time count; After responding to the determination that the WTRU timer has completed the countdown, the WTRU moves from the first DRX level to the second DRX level from the plurality of DRX levels without receiving explicit signaling from the base station to move from the first DRX level to the second DRX level, with the second DRX level contains the second DRX cycle duration, which is a multiple of the first DRX cycle duration of the first DRX level. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the WTRU timer is synchronized with the timer of the base station. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of transferring the WTRU from the second DRX layer to the first DRX layer. The method of claim 1, wherein said at least one DRX cycle duration is a function of the shortest DRX cycle duration. The method of claim 1, wherein the second DRX layer is synchronized with the base station. The method of claim 1, further comprising: the WTRU transitions from the second DRX layer to the first DRX layer based on uplink traffic models. The method of claim 1, further comprising: the WTRU transitions from the second DRX level to the first DRX level based on the measured events. The method of claim 1, wherein the DRX configuration comprises three DRX levels. The method of claim 1, wherein the first DRX cycle duration is first
