Abstract
Methods and corresponding systems for determining a transmit power in a mobile device (108) include receiving in the mobile device a cell-wide power control parameter related to a target receive power at a serving base station (104). Thereafter a transmit power is calculated (608) in response to the cell-wide power control parameter and an implicit mobile-specific power control parameter. The mobile device then transmits (610) using the transmit power. The cell-wide power control parameter can be a cell target signal to interference-plus-noise ratio or a fractional power control exponent. The implicit mobile-specific power control parameter can be a modulation and coding level previously used by the mobile device or a downlink SINR level measured by the mobile device.

1. A method for determining transmit power comprising: receiving in a mobile device a cell-wide power control parameter related to a target receive power at a serving base station; calculating, in a mobile device, a transmit power in response to the cell-wide power control parameter and an implicit mobile-specific power control parameter; and transmitting using the transmit power.
2. The method for determining transmit power according to claim 1 wherein the calculating a transmit power comprises calculating a transmit power in response to the cell- wide power control parameter, the implicit mobile-specific power control parameter, and a mobile-specific power control parameter received from the serving base station.
3. The method for determining transmit power according to claim 1 wherein the receiving in the mobile device the cell-wide power control parameter comprises receiving a cell target signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR).
4. The method for determining transmit power according to claim 1 wherein the receiving in the mobile device the cell-wide power control parameter comprises receiving a fractional power control exponent.
5. The method for determining transmit power according to claim 1 wherein the calculating the transmit power comprises calculating a transmit power using the cell-wide power control parameter and a modulation and coding level previously used by the mobile device.
6. The method for determining transmit power according to claim 1 wherein the calculating the transmit power comprises calculating a transmit power using the cell-wide power control parameter and a downlink SINR level measured by the mobile device.
7. The method for determining transmit power according to claim 1 wherein the calculating the transmit power comprises calculating a transmit power using the cell-wide power control parameter and a correlation between the mobile-specific power control parameter and a modulation and coding level assigned by the serving base station.
8. A method for controlling a transmit power for a mobile device comprising: determining a resource utilization limitation of the mobile device; determining whether the resource utilization limitation exceeds a reporting threshold; and in response to the resource utilization limitation exceeding the reporting threshold, sending a message from the mobile device to a base station indicating the resource utilization limitation.
9. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 wherein the determining a resource utilization limitation of the mobile device comprises determining a transmit power limitation of the mobile device in response to a current transmit power
10. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 wherein the determining a resource utilization limitation of the mobile device comprises determining a resource block limitation of the mobile device
11. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 wherein the determining whether the resource utilization limitation exceeds the reporting threshold comprises determining whether a power headroom limitation exceeds a reporting threshold
12. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 wherein the determining whether the resource utilization limitation exceeds the reporting threshold comprises determining whether a resource block capacity limitation exceeds a reporting threshold
13. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 wherein the sending a message from the mobile device to a base station indicating the resource utilization limitation comprises sending a message indicating the resource utilization limitation in response to a random access channel (RACH) response
14. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 wherein the sending a message from the mobile device to a base station indicating the resource utilization limitation comprises sending a message indicating the resource utilization limitation in a synchronized random access channel (RACH) message
15. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 wherein the sending a message from the mobile device to a base station indicating the resource utilization limitation comprises sending a message indicating the resource utilization limitation in response to a grant for a resource allocation

The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 further comprising: receiving a grant for a resource allocation that exceeds the resource utilization limitation of the mobile device; and transmitting in response to the grant for the resource allocation using a lower power in accordance with the resource utilization limitation
17. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 further comprising: receiving a grant for a resource allocation that exceeds the resource utilization limitation of the mobile device; and transmitting in response to the grant for the resource allocation using a lower-capacity modulation and encoding scheme than a granted modulation and encoding scheme in accordance with the resource utilization limitation
18. The method for controlling a transmit power according to claim 8 further comprising: receiving a grant for a resource allocation that exceeds the resource utilization limitation of the mobile device; and transmitting in response to the grant for the resource allocation using a reduced number of resource blocks than a granted number of resource blocks in accordance with the resource utilization limitation
19. A method for controlling power transmitted by a mobile device comprising: sending a resource allocation request from the mobile device to a base station; and receiving a dynamic resource allocation grant from the base station, wherein the dynamic resource allocation grant includes a power control instruction for use during the duration of the dynamic resource allocation grant.
20. The method for controlling power transmitted by a mobile device according to claim 19 further comprising: receiving a channel sounding request from the base station; and transmitting channel sounding data in response to the channel sounding request.
21. The method for controlling power transmitted by a mobile device according to claim 19 wherein the receiving the dynamic resource allocation grant comprises receiving a dynamic resource allocation grant that includes an allocation of a number of resource blocks, and an instruction to use a dynamic grant transmit power.
22. The method for controlling power transmitted by a mobile device according to claim 19 wherein the receiving the dynamic resource allocation grant comprises receiving a dynamic resource grant that grants resources within a mobile device resource limit, wherein the mobile device resource limit is related to a mobile device power limitation.
23. The method for controlling power transmitted by a mobile device according to claim 21 wherein the receiving the dynamic resource grant comprises receiving a dynamic resource grant that grants a number of resource blocks within a mobile device resource block limit, wherein the mobile device resource block limit is related to a mobile device power reserve.
24. The method for controlling power transmitted by a mobile device according to claim 19 wherein further comprising: sending a second resource allocation request from the mobile device to the base station; receiving a persistent resource allocation grant from the base station, wherein the persistent resource allocation grant includes a second power control instruction for initial use during the persistent resource allocation grant; and receiving subsequent power control instructions during the duration of the persistent resource allocation grant.
25. The method for controlling power transmitted by a mobile device according to claim 24 wherein the receiving subsequent power control instructions during the duration of the persistent resource allocation grant comprises receiving subsequent power adjustment instructions during the duration of the persistent resource allocation grant, wherein the instructions include one of an instruction to increment power and an instruction to decrement power.']
