Abstract
Apparatus and an associated method for providing transmit diversity to an open-loop MIMO communication scheme such as a point to multipoint broadcast service in a cellular system. Multiple data streams of the broadcast data are broadcast by way of transmit diversity antennas of a sending station. The data symbols of the separate data streams are phase-shifted to be offset in phase from one another. The data streams once the data symbols thereof are selectably phase-shifted by a phase shifter are applied by an applier to sending nodes of the respective cells.

1. Apparatus for communicating data formed of a stream of modulation symbols at multiple system inputs pursuant to a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) communication scheme, said apparatus communicating said modulation symbols to a plurality of mobile stations located through-out a first cell of a wireless communication system from first and second diversity antennas comprising: a first symbol diversity creator adapted to receive the stream of modulation symbols, said symbol diversity creator configured to split the stream of modulation symbols into a first sub-stream and a second sub-stream, the first symbol diversity creator configured to alter the phase of the symbols of the first sub-stream by a first phase amount, resulting in a phase shifted first sub-stream; and a first multiple-input applier configured to receive the first sub-stream and the second sub-stream and apply the first sub-stream to the first diversity antenna and apply the second sub-stream to the second diversity antenna.
2. A multi-cell communication system for communicating data formed of communication symbols comprising: a first symbol diversity creator embodied at a first cell and adapted to receive the stream of modulation symbols, said symbol diversity creator configured to split the stream of modulation symbols into a first sub-stream and a second sub-stream, the first symbol diversity creator configured to alter the phase of the symbols of the first sub-stream by a first phase amount, resulting in a phase shifted first sub-stream; a first multiple-input applier configured to receive the first sub-stream and the second sub-stream and apply the first sub-stream to a first diversity antenna and apply the second sub- stream to a second diversity antenna; a second symbol diversity creator embodied at a second cell and adapted to receive the stream of modulation symbols, said second diversity creator configured to split the stream of modulation symbols into a third sub-stream and a fourth sub-stream, the second symbol diversity creator configured to alter the phase of the symbols of the third sub-stream by the first phase amount, resulting in a phase shifted third sub-stream, and a second multi-input applier configured to receive the phase shifted third sub-stream and the fourth sub-stream and apply the phase shifted third sub-stream to a third diversity antenna in the second cell and apply the fourth sub-stream to a fourth diversity antenna in the second cell, wherein the phase shifted first sub-stream and the phase shifted third sub-stream are broadcast in a first manner and the second sub-stream and the fourth sub-stream are broadcast in a second manner.
3. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising a broadcast information generator adapted to receive indication of the phase shift said broadcast information generator configured to generate broadcast information indicative thereof.
4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the broadcast information comprises information related to the first manner and the second manner.
5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said symbol diversity creator is one of: a phase shifter, which shifts the phase of the first sub-stream by 90 degrees relative to the phased of the second sub-stream.

The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the MIMO communication scheme further comprises an OFDM, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed, scheme that defines OFDM channels at each system input of the multiple system inputs and wherein phase-shifting of the modulation symbols by said phase shifter comprises phase shifting modulation symbols upon the OFDM channels of the multiple system inputs.

The apparatus of claim 5 further comprising, a broadcast information generator further adapted to receive indication of phase-shifting performed by said symbol phase shifter, said broadcast information generator configured to generate broadcast information pertaining to communication of the data.
8. A method for communicating data formed of a stream of modulation symbols at multiple system inputs pursuant to a MIMO, Multiple Input Multiple Output, communication scheme, said method for communicating said modulation symbols through-out a first cell of a wireless communication system, from first and second diversity antennas, said method characterized by the operations of: splitting the stream of modulation symbols into a first sub-stream and a second sub- stream; phase-shifting modulation symbols of the second sub-stream, relative to the modulation symbols of the first sub-stream; applying modulation symbols of the first sub-stream to the first diversity antenna, the data sub-stream formed of non-phase-shifted modulation symbols; and applying phase-shifted symbols of the second sub-stream to the second diversity antenna.

A method for communicating data formed of modulation symbols pursuant to a MIMO communication scheme of a multi cell communication system, the multi-cell communication system having a first cell of a wireless communication system and first and second diversity antennas, and a second cell, the second cell having a third diversity antenna and a fourth diversity antenna, said method comprising the operations of: splitting the stream of modulation symbols into a first sub-stream and a second sub- stream; phase-shifting modulation symbols of the second sub-stream, relative to the modulation symbols of the first sub-stream; applying modulation symbols of the first sub-stream to the first diversity antenna, the data sub-stream formed of non-phase-shifted modulation symbols; and applying phase-shifted symbols of the second sub-stream to the second diversity antenna; splitting the stream of modulation symbols into a third sub-stream and a fourth sub- stream at the second cell; phase shifting modulation symbols of the fourth sub-stream relative to the modulation symbols of the third sub-stream, the phase shift applied to the fourth sub-stream being equal to the phase shift applied to the second sub-stream; applying modulation symbols of the third sub-stream to the third diversity antenna, the third sub-stream formed of non-phase-shifted modulation symbols; applying the phase-shifted symbols of the fourth sub-stream to the fourth diversity antenna; and broadcasting the first sub-stream and the third sub-stream in a first manner and the second sub-stream and the fourth sub-stream in a second manner
10. The method of claim 8 further comprising the operation of sending broadcast information, the broadcast information identifying phase-shifting information related to phase- shifting of the modulation symbols of the selected data stream
11. The method of claim 10 further comprising the operation of detecting the broadcast information at a wireless device
12. The method of claim 8 further comprising the operation of detecting, at a wireless device, at least one of the first sub-stream and the second sub-stream broadcast during said operation of broadcasting
13. The method of claim 12 further comprising the operation of recovering, at the wireless device, informational content of the data
14. The method of claim 9, further comprising broadcasting information related to the first manner and the second manner.']
