Abstract  Abstract

We present a method and system for the support of voice services over the Internet Protocol (VolP) over a wireless communication network. The data is encoded at a coding rate determined by a controller for the generation of a VolP packet. The encoded data includes error sensitive bits and non-error sensitive bits and the protection against errors is carried out independently by means of a medium access control layer and / or a physical layer. It is possible to selectively compress a VolP packet header according to an indication from the controller. A user datagram protocol (UDP) -Lite can be used for partial coverage of sensitive bits. It is possible for a receiving end to generate acceptable noise during a period of silence in which an acceptable noise packet is not received from a transmitting end. If the VolP packet does not fit in the assigned radio resource, this packet may be fragmented.
