Abstract  Abstract

A method and system for supporting VoIP services over a wireless communication network is disclosed. Encodes data at a coding rate specified by the controller to generate VoIP packets. Among the encoded data, bits that are error-sensitive and bits that are not error-sensitive are identified and error protection is performed separately by the media access control layer and / or the physical layer. The header of the VoIP packet may be selectively compressed according to the indication from the controller. UDP-Lite is available for partial coverage of error sensitive bits. The comfort noise may be generated by the receiver during the silent period without receiving the comfort noise packet from the transmitter. If the VoIP packet is not suitable for the currently allocated radio resource, the VoIP packet may be fragmented.
