Abstract  Abstract

handoff method for digital base stations with different spectral capacities. The present invention is directed to a digital wireless telecommunications system that includes a plurality of base stations with different spectral capacities and a plurality of remote stations capable of transmitting data to and receiving transmissions from the plurality of base stations. The present invention provides a method for handoff of remote stations between base stations with a narrower spectral capacity and base stations with a wider spectral capacity. A method is provided for a wireless telecommunications infrastructure to facilitate a remote station handoff from a set of narrowband compatible base stations to at least one broadband compatible base station while a remote station is in the range. coverage of both types of base stations. Additionally, the present invention provides remote station equipment, base station equipment and base station controller equipment for carrying out the handoff methodology of the present invention.
