Abstract  Abstract

A method for facilitating a remote station transfer between single carrier base stations (220) and multi-carrier base stations (120, 320), comprising the steps of: determining that a remote station (110, 210, 310) it is receiving signals in a first frequency band according to a simple carrier protocol; determining that the aforementioned remote station (110, 210, 310) is transmitting signals in a second frequency band according to said single carrier protocol, wherein said second frequency band is the same width as said first frequency band ; receiving signal strength measurements from several base stations (120, 220, 320) in a first message from said remote station (110, 210, 310); determining that at least one of said several base stations (120, 220, 320) is compatible (22) with single carrier, and that at least one of said several base stations is compatible (120, 320) with multi-carrier, and transmitting a second message to said remote station (110, 210, 310) indicating that said remote station (110, 210, 310) should start receiving signals in accordance with a multi-carrier protocol in a third frequency band that is wider than said first frequency band.
