Abstract  Abstract

The present invention relates to a digital wireless telecommunications system comprising a plurality of base stations having different spectral characteristics and comprising a plurality of remote stations capable of transmitting data to and receiving data from the plurality of base stations. The present invention provides a method for performing remote station handoff between a base station with narrow spectral characteristics and a base station with broad spectral characteristics. A method is provided for a wireless telecommunications infrastructure that facilitates remote station handoff from a narrowband compliant base station to at least one broadband compliant base station while the remote station is in the coverage area of both types of base stations. The present invention also provides a remote station apparatus, base station apparatus and base station controller apparatus to perform the handoff scheme of the present invention.
