Abstract
Systems and methods are provided for deciding on the placement of a transcoding functionality. The method involves receiving an indication of a codec type applicable to a call from a mobile switching center server. An indication is received when the transcoding of the codec type is placed in a selected media gateway or in a transcoder and rate adapter unit assigned to a base station controller for the call. The assigned transcoder and rate adapter unit or the selected media gateway is selected to place the transcoding functionality. Information on the selected codec and the placement of the transcoding functionality are sent towards the server.
