The method for a Base Station Controller, BSC, (30) of a mobile communication network for deciding on the placement of a transcoding functionality for a call involving a user equipment, UE, (10) said Station Controller Base (30) and a Media Gateway, MGW, (45) controlled by a respective Mobile Switching Center Server, MSC-S, (40), the respective mobile communication network that communicates according to an IP Protocol, the method that it comprises the steps of: receiving from said Mobile Switching Center Server (40) an indication of a codec type, SCVL, applicable to said call; characterized in that the method further comprises the steps of * receiving an indication, TRI, of whether the transcoding of said type of codec could be located in the selected Media Gateway (45) and in a Transcoder and Rate Adapter Unit, TRAU , (35) assigned to said Base Station Controller (30) for said call; * select to place the transcoding functionality either within the assigned Transcoder and Rate Adapter Unit (35) or within the Media Gateway (45) selected based on said received indication; and * send to the Mobile Switching Center Server (40) information about the selected codec and the placement of the transcoding functionality.
