Abstract  Abstract

Disclosed is a method for use in a base station controller (30) of a mobile communication network for deciding on the placement of transcoding functionality for a call involving a user equipment (10). The base station controller (30) and a media gateway (45) are controlled by a mobile switching centre server (40). The mobile communication network communicates according to an IP Protocol. The method includes receiving from the mobile switching centre server (40) an indication of a codec type applicable to the call. The method also includes receiving an indication of whether the transcoding of the codec type could be placed in the selected media gateway (45) and in a transcoder and rate adapter unit (35) assigned to the base station controller (30) for the call. The method further includes selecting to place the transcoding functionality either within the assigned transcoder and rate adapter unit (35) or within the selected media gateway (45) based on the received indication. Information on the selected codec and placement of the transcoding functionality is then sent to the mobile switching centre server (40). A base station controller (30) and a mobile switching centre server (40) for the performance of this method are also disclosed.
