Abstract  Abstract

Mobile terminal for use in an expanded spectrum CDMA communications system, the mobile terminal comprising: means for receiving from a base station, a base pilot signal and a base data signal, each with a pseudorandom chip code sequence; means for transmitting to the base station a remote pilot signal and a remote data signal, each with a sequence of pseudorandom chip code; means for synchronizing the chip code sequence of the remote pilot signal transmitted with the chip code sequence of the base pilot signal received to allow the base station to generate a distance determination; means for receiving a distance determination from the base station; means for adjusting the phase of the code in response to the determination of the distance to adjust a phase of the remote data signal and remote pilot signal; and mode control means for selecting one of a plurality of mobile terminal operating modes; wherein the plurality of operating modes comprises a first mode where the chip code sequence of the remote pilot signal is synchronized with the chip code sequence of the received base pilot signal and the remote data signal is synchronized with the remote pilot signal, a second mode where the remote data signal is adjusted in the distance and the mobile terminal subordinates the remote pilot signal to the received base pilot signal, and a third mode where the remote pilot signal is shifted in phase to be synchronized with the data signal remote, and is adjusted in the distance, where the base station receives the remote data signal adjusted in the distance and the remote pilot signal adjusted in the orthogonal distance to other signals adjusted in the distance.
