A user equipment, UE, for establishing a communication link comprising: a first module (12), for processing or processing a received communication signal and generating an index value associated with a primary synchronization code within said signal of communication, said first module comprising: a splitter (19) for dividing a sampled communication signal into odd and even samples; a Hierarchical Golay Correlation device, HGC, (21, 22), to correlate the odd and even samples with a primary synchronization code of the communication signal, and to generate complex values of the odd and even samples; an absolute value modifier, AVM, (23, 24) to approximate the signal strength values for each of the odd and even samples; a decision circuit (25) to accumulate the approximate signal strength values of the samples within a frame of the communication signal, assigning an index value to the highest accumulated signal strength value, and to determine a mismatch of chip based on said index value; a normalization circuit (26) to normalize the accumulated signal strength value; a query table (27) to determine a gain factor based on the number of accumulated frames; a multiplier (28) to generate a noise threshold based on the normalized signal strength value and the gain factor; and a comparator (29) to compare the noise threshold with the highest accumulated signal strength value to make a first decision; a second module (14) for generating a group number of cryptographic mixing code, a slot mismatch, a secondary synchronization code based on the output provided by the first module; a third module (16) for retrieving a primary cryptographic mix code based on the cryptographic mix code group number and the slot mismatch; and a controller (18) coupled to said first module (12), second module (14) or third module (16) to control a search frequency of the user equipment, UE, to establish a communication link.
